Chapter Ten: The Assault Point and a Dark Glimpse of Eschatology
Agg hadn’t noticed it before, but there’s a pair of izon charges placed at one side of the hatch.
“Hey, Human,” he starts.
“Yeeees?” The Human answers from somewhere unseen.
“Hell you thinking, putting explosives at my door? I sort of need this ship— and I’m pretty sure you’re not good to pay for damages.”
“Nothing to worry about, my friend. They won’t cause any lasting damage… well, at least not at that range… I suppose you’ll have to use your door’s manual controls for a little while, but otherwise it’ll be fine.”
“Haha, very funny. Please don’t detonate explosives inside my ship— inside the exact room we’re all in.”
“It’s a big room.”
“That doesn’t matter if it depressurizes everything and kills us!” Agg argues as the fizzing sound and small, pin-point light disappear from the other side of the door.
“I have something else in mind.”
“Where are you, anyway?”
“Cockpit.”
“Wha—Why?! They’re seconds away from getting in!”
“Because it has the airlock controls, obviously.”
Agg was just about to explain how unbelievably bad an idea it is to even think of airlock controls while fighting on the ship that said controls have dominion over, when the doors to the connecting ship blast open and from it storms forth… nothing.
“Wonderful,” The Human says with a charmed enthusiasm. “Lieutenant?”
Cole peeks over to Eqarne and the cook droid. “Sir.”
“Aim for the center of the ship.”
“But there’s no one there.”
“Their L.R.’s are a world beyond our own, almost 100% distortion-free,” The Human says.
“Well shit, how do we find them, then?” Cole asks, already imagining the instant death they’re facing.
“Traditionally we wouldn’t and they’d probably end up killing us all— as only the chef robot has an L.R. scope; but we have izon at the door.”
“Short range E.M.P.?” Cole questions, “But we can’t know when they’re in range.”
“We can’t see them— but we can hear them.”
“What are y-”
“Surely, Lieutenant, even you aren’t quite that dull.”
Cole looks from the charge on the door as the invisible operators approach over to the other side of the ship— the airlock light is green.
“You’re fucking nuts,” Cole remarks, glancing to his Glass to make sure his life-support system’s working properly.
“Sit tight, everyone,” The Human says as everyone’s doors close on his command; the same moment, the opposing door to the operator’s entry point opens just a half meter. Detecting the large drop in pressure, the ship the operators came from shuts violently, creating a small enough space to pull the operators off their feet and hurtle them toward the door. The operators switch on their hull-sures, and their boots snap back onto the floor, making an audible sound next to the charge — perfect. The Human hits his izon charge- simultaneously pulsing the entire enemy team in the E.M.P. blast. The L.R. cloaks deactivate with a fizzy noise of protest as the operator’s boots simultaneously fail in holding them to the hull. The team of four are again hurtled toward the slightly-open airlock door— only for it to do the expectedly brutal thing, and open all the way for a split second.
